Burns night – three easy scotch cocktails that will have you singing at supper.

For some of you Burns night might not be the biggest celebration in the calendar for the end of January, but this month has already been a bit of long one!

Because of that I for one would welcome the opportunity to make some great drinks and eat my fill on a Monday evening!

With that in mind, our general manager Luke has three great scotch whisky cocktails to share with you that are both easy to make and tasty to boot!

So pop your favourite glass in the freezer, grab your cocktail shaker, a jigger, a strainer and a bar spoon then follow these super simple recipes below.

Fig.1 Rusty Nail

Rusty Nail

An old school classic two ingredient drink that really does prove the old saying “less is more”.

 Ingredients:

45ml blended scotch (We like to use Monkey Shoulder which is a blended malt, but any scotch blend will do here)

15ml Drambuie

To Garnish:

Lemon twist

How to:

1.)    Using your jigger, place your ingredients into your cocktail shaker with lots of cubed ice.

2.)    Stir with your barspoon for about 10 – 15 seconds, or until a frost starts to form on the outside.

3.)    Grab your glass and fill it with ice (You don’t have to used big chunks but that’s what we prefer)!

4.)    Peel a bit of lemon and make it look pretty.

5.)    Use your strainer to pour from the shaker into your glass, squeeze some of the lemon oils over the drink, twist then pop on top.

Fig 2. Dramble

Fig 2. Dramble

Dramble

A reinvention of the familiar modern classic Dick Bradsell drink the Bramble. Super tasty with a great name.

Ingredients:

50ml blended scotch

20ml sugar syrup (made by combining equal parts sugar and boiling water then stirred until dissolved).

20ml fresh lemon juice

To Garnish:

Crème de mure blackberry liqueur

Fresh blackberry

Mint sprig

How to:

1.)    Using your jigger, place your ingredients into your cocktail shaker with lots of cubed ice.

2.)    Secure the top and shake nice and hard until a frost forms on the tin (around 30 seconds or so).

3.)    Grab a fresh glass and fill it with ice (If you have the time then crack the ice with the back of a spoon).

4.)    Use your strainer to pour from the shaker into your glass then gently pour a couple of spoonful’s of blackberry liqueur over the drink.

5.)    Place your garnish on top and then you are good to go!

Smoke and Mirrors

Fig 3. Smoke and Mirrors

This one is for those of you that want something that is a little bit different to the above and while there are many great scotch numbers out there (we could have easily put a penicillin here which everyone loves and be done with it). We feel that this is a great little drink for the occasion.

Made by Alex Day of Death & Co in 2010 Smoke and Mirrors pairs big smoky scotch flavours with the freshness of mint and absinthe.

Ingredients:

40ml Blended scotch

10ml Islay scotch (like Laphroaig or Ardberg)

20ml Sugar syrup

25ml Fresh lime juice

Half a teaspoon of absinthe (Pernod is a good brand)

1 small handful of mint leaves

To Garnish:

Mint sprig

How to:

1.)    Clap with your mint leaves in your hands and pop them in your cocktail shaker.

2.)    Then, using your jigger, place the rest of your ingredients into your cocktail shaker with lots of cubed ice (Measure your absinthe with you barspoon or teaspoon)

3.)    Secure the top and shake nice and hard until a frost forms on the tin (around 30 seconds or so).

4.)    Grab your glass and then fill it with ice.

5.)    Use your strainer to pour from the shaker into your glass and place your garnish on top!

Easy as 1, 2, 3!

Its really that easy, and you can grab all these ingredients from your local supermarket.

So, look up your favourite poems, mix up some of these and then show off to all your mates over Zoom.
